To understand what causes termite infestations, we must first know the the different types of local Termites. There are two main categories of Termites in our area, Subterranean and Drywood. Both have one thing in common. They eat wood..
Subterranean Termites are the most common in our area. These termites like to feed on moist wood located on the ground. They are especially fond of the bottom portions of wall studs and floor joists components. A tell-tale sign of these invaders include mud tunnels that they build from their underground home to moist wood that they like to eat.
These Termites live in the soil beneath and around homes and often enter through wood that touches the ground or by constructing mud tubes from the ground to the wood they infest. Cracks in concrete walls and foundations made of hollow blocks are also paths these insects could take to infest a house.
Drywood Termites generally live, feed and nest in undecayed wood which has a very low moisture content. Unlike subterranean termites, they do not require any contact with the soil in order to live. Thus, they can seriously damage the upper portions of a house such as studs, attics, fascia boards, roof sheeting, patio covers, etc… These areas are the most common, and also the most preventable.
Although Drywood Termites live in “dry wood”, they will commonly enter through weakened rotted wood such as “Dry Rot”. Believe it or not, Dry Rot is caused by reoccurring wet or damp wood.
Common Causes are Leaky Roofs and poor weather proofing techniques on wood conponants such as Windows, Fascia Boards and Patio Covers.
Homeowners in Mission Viejo including myself are constantly faced with reoccuring maintenance on our homes, Termite and Dry Rot Repair are at the top of the list. Sometimes it seems like the upkeep on our house is never ending, and expensive repairs become necessary much too often.
As both a contractor and a Mission Viejo homeowner, it's important to me to eliminate the environments that cause reoccurring Dry Rot and Termite infestations. None of us want to be a slave to our homes by enduring costly wood repairs year after year especially when they are preventable.
Termites and Dry Rot are a result of reoccurring contact with water or dampness. Roof leaks, siding leaks and exposed wood such as patio covers, fascia and eve boards, and decorative wood beams are a major source. We propose that when it comes time for major wood repairs, you should also consider having the contractor correct the flaws that caused the problems in the first place.
We are experts in this field. We would not only replace the damaged wood but we can also trace down and eliminate the causes, thus reducing or stopping reoccurrences. We have served Mission Viejo since 1980. We have unique and innovative weatherproofing solutions. At Blue Knight Termite Control and Construction, we are not guided by the National Termite Control Guidelines, we exceed them by far. We practice higher standards as defined by us, from many years of accurately interpreting what causes Termite environments.
